Mercedes has been considered a symbol of comfort for several decades now. One of the components providing much of the comfortable ride is the air suspension. The designers of each new car model strive to create the most durable suspension, which can ensure a smooth ride, even when the vehicle is fully loaded.
Features of the Fourth Generation 4matic
4matic is the in-house all-wheel drive system of Mercedes that is also a registered trademark. 4matic is an electronic control of the ratio of torque on wheels and axles. The front axle is the main one, but in difficult conditions, the electronics connect also the rear axle.
The 4th generation of the system launched in 2006, and the radical update was the introduction of a planetary gear with a distribution between the axles of 45% to 55%. The electronics controls the contact of the wheels with the road, and all-wheel drive is permanent. The system is adjusted for maximum control and traction in difficult road conditions.
Airmatic air suspension was a standard feature on the Mercedes W220. The static and dynamic support is provided by four air suspension struts. Each of them consists of an air spring and a shock absorber in one unit. The compressor pumps air into the air suspension struts, and the valve block controls the pressure in the system depending on the weight of the car.
Here are some of the advantages of Airmatic:
- high degree of safety and stability of the vehicle during the ride;
- adaptation of the suspension to any road surface and driving style;
- automatic reduction of clearance at speeds above 70 km/h;
- possibility for individual adaptation (the choice of the level of stiffness for a comfortable ride even if the driver's handling is sporty or extreme).
ABC (Active Body Control)
The smart ABC (Active Body Control) suspension provides maximum comfort, because each of the air suspension struts is individually controlled. With the help of a computer, the system monitors the degree of loading, movement, and changes in speed.
ABC (Active Body Control) suppresses unwanted shaking of the car body in case of sharp braking or rolling at high speeds. Depending on the weight distribution, the stiffness of a particular air suspension strut decreases or increases, or the ride height changes. The system can last several times longer than the Airmatic air suspension, but it costs more to repair or service it in the event of a breakdown.
