Unfortunately, the surface of our roads is not always of the highest quality. And without a good air suspension, sometimes it is impossible to drive on them. Thanks to this system, it is possible to not only increase the clearance between the vehicle and the road surface, but also to smoothen the vibrations caused by off-road driving.
What are the functions of the air suspension?
The air suspension is a type of car suspension. Its main functions are:
- adjustment of the clearance of the car to increase the off-road performance and loading capacity;
- change of the stiffness of the suspension to improve steering.
There are three main types of air suspension; single-circuit, dual-circuit or quadruple-circuit. The first one is installed on a single axis. Generally is part of the base equipment of cargo vehicles. Its function is to change the clearance of the rear axis. The second one can be installed on one or two axis. In the first case, it allows for independent adjustment of the wheels; in the second case, it functions as a single-circuit air suspension. The four-circuit air suspension is the most functional. Its system includes sensors and an electronic control unit.
The air suspension consists of the following components :
- compressor Air supply device;
- air receiver device for minimal clearance adjustments;
- air spring (airbag, air bellow); ) main element of the air suspension;
- air lines hoses, on through which the air is transferred to pneumatic components.
The air spring transmits the momentum from the road surface to the body of the vehicle. It changes the stiffness of the suspension, distributes and aligns the loads, ensures the stability of the vehicle when driving on slopes. This is the reason why it is the basis of the air suspension.
The capacity of the air spring depends on the mileage of the car and the number of vibrations. In general, a good air spring is designed for 6-7 million vibrations, which means about 6 years of intensive operation. In order to extend the lifespan, it is necessary to make preventive inspections, to clean the components of dirt and to monitor the operability of shock absorbers and of other elements of the air suspension.
How to choose the right air suspension for the
Volkswagen Touareg has been produced since 2002 and has become the third SUV in the brand's history. For VW the manufacturer offers 2 types of air suspension: p>
Unlike the standard one, the sports suspension in its normal mode has a lower clearance and feels stiffer. That is necessary for improvement of the steering of the vehicle at high speeds and compensation of the roll-offs on turns.
In both cases, the suspension has 3 modes — loaded, normal and off-road. The “loaded” mode has a minimum clearance and automatically switches to normal when accelerating. The “off-road” mode has a speed limit of 70 km/h, in case of exceeding that speed, the air suspension switches to the “normal” mode.
